Chapter Six

Standing in front of Dirk's desk, Bæría watched as her cousin walked to the chilled bank of thick-paned window behind his desk and looked out. "You do believe me, do you not?" Evensong had just finished and the chilling even had just concluded its cold, foggy march across the land. Despite it being early spring, an icy mist still lingered tenaciously in the drenched air. 'Twas not formal rain; nevertheless, everything outside was absolutely soaked from the freezing ice-daggers. Inside, however, a roaring fire crackled and popped within the grand fireplace in the wall adjacent to the large bank of windows at which Dirk now stood. Between the warm orange glow of the fire and the yellow of the amble hanging oil lamps, the entire office was generously lighted.

Dirk rested his left arm along the mullion of the middle window behind his desk, drawing his shaking right hand through his wavy hair. "I have no reason to doubt you." His strong voice was lowered and almost menacing. "You would not have roused me it you did not believe it."

"You have to call off the celebrations." As Dirk started to pace toward his finely crafted desk, Bæría's eyes followed him. She leaned across the oaken top as her cousin paced behind his thickly leathered chair. "I know that you are excited about your engagement, as am I. Maybe she will tame you. However, 'tis just not safe and there is no way to completely secure the Ranch."

Dirk found a bit of humor, if only momentary. "Do not count on it her taming me, Cousin!"

"What I am saying is that the celebrations are in danger, based on what I overheard. Darís is planning on disrupting the celebrations. I can only imagine that somehow the security of the Ranch will be compromised."

"That is the sticking point, is it not? Darís."

Bæría nodded her agreement, settling back into her chair. "Certainly, 'tis not Galen Darís. As far as I know he has not fallen out with any of us. I know that you have alienated a lot of people, but he is not one of them."

"He has a brother."

"I know, but Viktór Darís has not been around these parts in sun-cycles. Why would he come back?" She shrugged her confusion.

"Well, I am planning on marrying his sister, Rennæ. Perhaps, he wants to mend bridges with his family because of it. Men can change if the situation is dire enough, even him."

"Do not count on it!" At this, 'twas Bæría's time to laugh. "From what I remember about Viktór, such is not blood likely."

"He is a troubled man, Bæría," Dirk shook his head. "And, soon, he will be my brother-in-law, regardless of what he has done."

"'Tis all good and nice that you can some way of forgiving him, Dirk. But, I would remind you that this is a security issue, and am I not supposed to be your security advisor, albeit informally?"

"You are." Dirk eased himself toward his liquor cabinet and turned toward her. Holding out the carved crystal decanter of whiskey, he lifted his eyebrows.
